Media Arts and Music Star to Attend School in Great Britain
by Isela Larreinaga, Junior Writer
While seniors are still in class next month, Media, Arts and Music Senior Hemrani Kalicharan will be across the globe studying at the University of Ulster in Birmingham, UK in Europe.
Being a senior, the college application process began with the influence of college advisor Ms. Gordon. As a young girl, Hemrani was always interested in business. In the summer of last year, she took the decision to apply for a business scholarship at the University of Ulster, Birmingham which is in the United Kingdom. Only a few days after she applied, she received a letter of acceptance. The University of Ulster scheduled an interview the same summer and she flew to the United Kingdom with her mother.
She has an impressive history that has led to where she is now, but it’s only the beginning for her. Over the years in high school, she joined charities/organizations like SEVA, and Desi Rising Up. She also was on the Handball team, and held an internship at Junior Sikh Coalition where she helped kids who are being bullied. Besides joining all these extracurricular activities, she has had a very arduous journey through high school and will graduate early with a 3.6 GPA. Hemrani loves to write as well, as she will continue writing her new book “Scandal” while overseas.
Hemrani could’ve chosen a college in NYC or anywhere in the United States, but she wants to start a new chapter of her life somewhere she hasn’t been in for an abundant amount of time. “Going to a school in another country is the perfect opportunity to change my lifestyle,” she said. She feels very confident in herself that she will succeed in Birmingham, but she is very nervous to start her lifestyle differently than what she was used to. She is planned to leave earlier than usual to get accustomed to living overseas Leaving early in the school year may sound sad, but her mother works for the airport, so it will be very easy for her to come and visit back family and friends.
Although Hemrani succeeded into achieving a scholarship she has many people influence her to the road of success. Her main influences were Media, Arts and Music Director Mr. Panepinto, AMAM Counselor, Ms. Dejean, College Advisor Ms. Gordon, History teacher Mr. Malik and her parents. “Without them, I wouldn’t have been where I am now.” She believed in herself as much as her influences, as she stated, “I knew I could do something big. When I have a strong passion, I’ll do anything in my power to fulfill it.”
Her goal now is to attend college in the UK, and soon start a hotel company in Dubai that becomes a chain of businesses throughout Europe. She is prepared for what the world has in store for her and her future. Hemrani will be in NYC in June to join her classmates in Hillcrest’s graduation.
