Boys wrestling team on a rocky way uphill
By jonathan perez, senior writer
The Hillcrest Wrestling team has been of to a mixed start with a 3-2 record. The team defeated Robert Kennedy, Jamaica, and earned a forfeit win while losing to Thomas Edison and John Bowne due to the team's lack of weight classes which caused the team to forfeit some matches.
The team is comprised of new wrestlers and a few returning wrestlers, which means they have lots of work to do for them to make it to the playoffs. Nevertheless, they have won matches with first-year wrestlers in the starting line up putting up a fight against other schools whose starting lineup is full of three-year and four-year wrestlers.
Team Captains Isaiah Campbell and Moroni Guevara are senior wrestlers who have been on the team long enough to gain an understanding and love for the sport and know what it takes to excel in it. “Moroni and Isaiah are very hard workers. Because they are both in different weight classes, their style of wrestling are different. Moroni’s weight class is typically very fast and technical; whereas, Isaiah's weight class is more speed and power. The reason they are both successful is because they are both sound , technical wrestlers and that is what helps them succeed on the mat.” The head coach Mr. Beauzile and co-coach Mr. Kaufman have been coaching the team for many years now and are always trying there best to motivate their wrestlers.
The team plays Cardozo at Hillcrest gym on December 23rd before going on Christmas break.
