Dunkin Donuts to Remove Metallic Agent from Their Doughnuts
By Trishanna Singh, Senior Writer
Your favorite donuts are being treated with chemicals that could be dangerous for you
There used to be no better feeling than picking out your favorite doughnut at your nearest Dunkin Donuts. That was until we found out that what we thought was confectionery sugar is really Titanium Dioxide. In the city of New York, where they are banning plastic foam and trying to make this city better, how is it that no one knew this health hazard before?
Dunkin Donuts claims that the Titanium Dioxide is used to make the powder a brighter white color. Titanium Dioxide comes from the element of a metal, hence the name Titanium and it is used in multiple vitamins and Cosmetics. The exposure of this Titanium Oxide chemical you have been eating with coffee on your morning commute is dangerous to the human body. According to Dr.Axe.com, Titanium Oxide can lead to problems with the immune system in the body. The uses of Titanium Oxide widely varied from food, to cars, and now being exposed in your favorite powdered jelly doughnut.
Although Titanium is allowed in certain vitamins and candies, only one percent of the ingredient is approved. However a nonprofit company by the name of As You Sow claims that there is a nanoparticle in the Titanium Oxide that is banned by the FDA. As You Sow also claims that it can cause chromosomal damage when consumed according to CNN Money. The Nanomaterial was called Asbestos and in response to the FDA choice to ban Titanium Dioxide, Dunkin Donuts have disagreed with the claim on the Titanium Dioxide.
A representative from the Dunkin Donuts Cooperation has quoted in a Huffington Post article that "the ingredient used in our powdered donuts does not meet the definition of 'nanomaterial' as outlined under FDA guidance. Nevertheless, we began testing alternative formulations for this product in 2014 and we are in the process of rolling out a solution to the system that does not contain titanium dioxide".
At the end of everything, we really are not aware of what we eat. Think about mothers and children who eat their favorite powdered jelly donuts, or people that are severely sick. Many were shocked to hear this discovery.Could it be a hazard for their children ? As You Sow also saw the product in Hostess Powdered Donuts.
Dunkin Donuts have agreed to discard the ingredient from their donuts. This is a reminder, however, that we are at the mercy of big companies in terms of what they put in our foods!
