The Model United Nations team won three international awards at the Change the World Model United Nations conference that hosted schools from across America and a dozen nations worldwide.
Seniors Maria Pazmino and Zainab Tahir, two leaders in the class since sophomore year, won Honorable Mention for Best Delegate for their work representing South Africa in the Human Rights Council. Maria felt they won the award because “they handled the committee in a very innovative way. “We tried to connect with people who had a different points of view than that of South Africa.” The win was bittersweet for Maria and Zainab as this was their last conference in their Hillcrest MUN career.
Saif Khan and Kervens Jasmin won Honorable Mention for Best Delegate for representing South Africa in the UNEP committee and Kazi Ahmed won Honorable Mention for representing South Africa in the Futuristic Security Council.
This was the team’s first competition since their former adviser Mr. Shult left to become the Assistant Principal of Social Studies at Martin Van Buren High School in February. The team’s new adviser Mr.Jackson loved the experience of working with the amazing MUN team. “It was the best experience of my teaching experience so far because students were given a challenge against students from other countries and they stepped up to the plate.” He also said that he enjoyed the experience because “teachers are used to a certain structure of teaching and we all dream of a student ran class , and that isn’t feasible but THESE students make it able to happen . It allows students to tackle real world applications as applied to a teacher ran classroom.” It appeared to be a great experience to both Maria and Mr.Jackson. Mr.Jackson said that he thought the students who won the awards were self driven , motivated , responsible and committed. To him CWMUN is about students addressing global issues using leadership roles to address global issues through problem based learning.
