KYLIE JENNER CHALLANGE HEALTH RISKS
By Nataleh Wallace, junior writer
There are always new trends on social media such as facebook, instagram, twitter, etc. Videos of teens attempting the “Kylie Jenner Challenge” have been going viral and tempting more and more teens to participate in the challenge. Trends shouldn’t always be followed and the “Kylie Jenner Challenge” is a perfect example of why. Little do most of the teens who decide to participate in the challenge know, they are putting themselves at risk.
This challenge consists of the participant suctioning their lips as hard as they can, into a shot glass for about five minutes. After the five minutes pass the participant then releases their lips from the mouth of the shot glass, which reveal severely swollen tingly or numb lips accompanied with a ring around the mouth. The goal of this challenge is to get plump lips that supposedly resemble Kylie Jenner’s lips. The videos of teens attempting this challenge are often laughed at but the actual health risks and long-term effects of this challenge are being over-looked.
When the participant has their lips suctioned in the mouth of the shot glass all of the blood vessels in their lips are being forced to the surface of the lips at once for a long period of time, which can cause the blood vessels in the lips to break and cause permanent damage. Other long term effects of this challenge are permanent bruising, scarring, and swelling of the lips. When the shot glass is having the air sucked out of it by the participant there is a good chance of the shot glass breaking. If the shot glass breaks while on the participants lip, the shattered glass or even plastic can cut the participants lip and cause permanent scarring.
One of the many participants who have been injured due to this challenge says “There was some bruising. It’s numb now. When it first happened my lips were tingly then it went numb and now they’re sore”. The effects of this challenge can end up being long-term and there should be a ban put on the “Kylie Jenner Challenge”.
