In Ms. Ramjan's 2nd period class students were asked to discuss in an essay the role of women in the poem "The Iliad."
By Enas Mohsen
In life, women are often denied power, however in "The Iliad", by Homer, women have strong characters. I believe that the female characters from The Iliad have a stronger role than men. The war that happened for nine whole years between the Greeks and the Trojans was all because of women.
The female characters from The Iliad have stronger characters than men. One woman who had a strong role was Aphrodite. She cast a spell on Helen (wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta) to fall in love with Paris (prince of Troy) which was the cause of the Trojan War. She also helped Paris while he was fighting Menelaus and was about to get killed during the “dual”. This shows how her role in the story was important. It also shows what a strong character she was for fighting against men.
Some other strong female characters from The Iliad, are Helen and Thetis. Helen was the reason why the Trojan War occurred. She got thousands of brave soldiers killed. Her action causes women to standout and proves that women had a strong role in the Trojan War. Thetis is the mother of Achilles and the goddess of the sea. Agamemnon hurt Achilles’ pride after he took away his girl. Thetis went to Zeus to make sure that Agamemnon was punished for what he did. Zeus helped the Trojans out because he owes Thetis a favor for saving his life. This shows how a woman influenced the god of all gods – Zeus.
In conclusion, the story of The Iliad shows that women have stronger roles than men. According to the poem, Aphrodite, Thetis and Helen had strong roles. This shows that women were brave enough to be able to fight for what they think is right even if it was for revenge.
