BONJOUR! FROM THE French club
By Laura valencia, '18
You might walk around and notice posters that lure you to join a club; one of those is the French Club poster. Mr.Follyga, the AP of the foreign language department, wanted French to be explored by anyone who wished to learn more about the culture and people of the French language . The French club is open to everyone.
By starting the French Club, Mr.Follyga hopes that students will appreciate the French language, that it is important and fun to learn. And, Mr.Follyga stated, “to give students [who] are learning French at Hillcrest the opportunity to meet other students that love French culture and history.” He asked two of his best students in his French class, Natalia Robayo and Laura Valencia, both Juniors, to help him spread the word and to plan many of the activities that the French Club can offer students at Hillcrest.
The club has a variety of activities. For example, Mr.Rios came to the French club with his guitar and played French songs for the club members. The participants were able to practice and learn French, not only by talking to other club members, but also by singing along. Some other activities include arts and crafts, watching movies in French that illustrate the french speaking culture, ways to explore and understand it better, listening to French music, and participating in planned trips to French restaurants and museums.
Some of the trips that are being planned are trips to the United Nations, the French cultural center, and one of the best French restaurants in the city. The French club is also getting T-shirts that promote the club, so that students in the club could express their love for French culture.
You do not have to know or take French to join the club, many students like Ankita Datta, a junior, have joined the club without taking French classes because of their interest in French culture and the opportunity to learn. Ankita states,, “The club is worth spending an hour on after school on Thursdays”.Another student, Monica Dutan, stated: “The French club is fun, the students are eager to learn and they enjoy the activities that are planned for the club”.
Additional activities are already on the planer board, from international gastronomy to French fashion designers. The club meets on Thursdays in room 116, Principal’s conference room, after period 9 until 5 pm. Tout le monde est bien venue! Everyone is welcomed! So, come and find out!
