Questbridge Finalists Represent the Best of Hillcrest
By Emily Ram, Senior Writer & Editor
Hillcrest High School is proud that seven seniors from across various SLCs were selected out of thousands of students applicants to become QuestBridge finalists. QuestBridge finalists are known as students that show high-achieving, hard working excellence that surprasses the average academic skill of mediocre students. These finalists are Pre-Med’s Maria Pazmino, Soraya Alli, Loretta Eboigbe, and Jose Larios, Teachers of Tomorrow’s Shaharan Chowdhury, and Media, Arts and Music’s Zainab Tahir and Sunpreet Singh.
QuestBridge is a prestigious scholarship to help outstanding students with low income attend top colleges. QuestBridge allows motivated low-income students who are in high school to have the opportunity to be successful in America's best colleges, graduate schools and companies.
It is proven that many low-income students in America don't apply to top colleges even if they want to. One study shows that only 3% of students attending in top universities were drawn from families falling from the lowest economic quartile. QuestBridge searches for kids who have the potential to attend these colleges who don't have the financial benefits as high-income students.
Low-income students often go unnoticed by colleges they deserve to attend. Due to this dreadful fact, QuestBridge finds some of the brightest young minds to get opportunities they truly deserve.
Becoming a finalist in the QuestBridge scholarship is not only a huge step towards success for college, but “pays off all 12 years of hard work students have been doing” said Maria Pazmino, QuestBridge finalist.
The process of becoming one starts off by filling an application for the scholarship that opens a door to even better things in senior year. These students had to write many essays, get them approved, polish extra curriculars and order score reports. With all their hard work, these students now have a great organization to back them up for the amazing schools they now have the opportunity to attend.
Mrs. Gordon, Hillcrest’s College Counselor expresses her love and faith in these kids by expressing how “proud (she) was of all their hard work and excellence they’ve put into winning this scholarship”. Having the opportunity to “put yourself out there to all these competitive schools I may have the chance to get into is very rewarding,” said Maria Pazmino. Winning a scholarship with such a massive amount of weight is a huge deal and should be noticed by many.
Congratulations and good luck to all of our QuestBridge finalists!
