After many years of service to the Hillcrest community, Mr. Cubero has left his position as Assistant Principal of Social Studies to become the Principal of High School of Contemporary Arts in the Bronx.
“I am humbled that the Superintendent gave me the opportunity to lead a school”, said the new principal. Although he was nervous and didn’t know what to expect, administering the Social Studies department at Hillcrest has given him insight on what is necessary to direct a school. “Leading the department for the past four years has given me experience in teacher evaluation and professional development. The History department at Hillcrest has great teachers and they helped me grow professionally,” stated Mr. Cubero.
Throughout his career in Hillcrest, Mr. Cubero spread his knowledge of History to students. He was a co-founder of the Public Service and Law SLC, was involved in ensuring the academic success of ESL students and taught College Now classes. Senior in Media Arts and Music, Bacilio Bencosme, knew Mr. Cubero outside of school and commends his passion for seeing the prosperity of students. “He was a genuine man, you could tell he really cared about his students, and wanted them to prosper,” said Bacilio. Former Theatre Director Mr. Meishner has taken over as Assistant Principal and stated that “it's sad to see him to leave although he is doing great things”.
Mr. Cubero has high hopes that he can turnaround the struggling students he took over but is not done with Hillcrest High School. “My hopes for this school is to improve the attendance rate, graduation rate and build a strong contemporary arts program. I would like to build and foster a strong partnership with Hillcrest High School.”
