Hillcrest’s Japanese Club is an interactive way of learning the Japanese language and culture, as well as providing you with the opportunity to earn an extra foreign language credit to graduate.
Every Friday after 9th in the library, you have the opportunity to learn basic Japanese expressions, become more accessible to learning abroad through scholarships, and get one step closer to earning extra foreign language credits. The club is structured like a college or university level Japanese 101 class, to help students excel in the Japanese language in a quick and easy way. Mr. Wasden, Assistant Principal of English Language Learners, stated, “First, students learned basic expressions to introduce themselves and to interact with Japanese students their age. After that, we learned Japanese words that would allow us to talk about Japanese history and culture.”
Members describe their club activities and gatherings as fun and enjoyable experiences that greatly aid them in becoming more college-ready. Jimmy Li, of the Japanese Club stated, “I would recommend the Japanese Club to all students, to educate themselves on the many amazing things that Japan has to offer. Japan is a country full of tradition and culture like no other..”
With Japan being so far away from us, it is amazing that Japan’s culture and lifestyle can be displayed in such a realistic way, in a high school club!
