The Boys JV Basketball team earned revenge against John Bowne High School with a 56-55 victory that improved their regular season record to 9-1 and a first-place tie in the Queens IV Division.
In the season there has only been one team that has been able to defeat the boys, and that is the John Bowne JV team. They are were the biggest competition for the team. The first game they played against Bowne, they had a close game of 63-53. The boys state that they lost because of bad calls and a lot of mistakes. Cameron Brown stated that for the following game against Bowne they will knew what to expect. Julian Walter stated they wanted to “End their hope of winning in the first quarter”. They got their revenge by a very close game of 56-55. Ranking them number one in their division.
The players of the JV team are now progressing because now they play as a team. Coach Nunez states that “It was rough at first as everyone was trying to figure out their roles on the team”.Captain, Jesly Tabertus, states the team is now “a comradery, We are like a brotherhood”. Last year the team stated that they would put each other down and try to fight each other. After everyone found their role on the team, the team began to progress and do well. The players have to put the team first and if not, they are not allowed to play. The Coach always reminds the team that they have to be an elite teammate before being an elite athlete. The team states that a big difference from last season is the way they practice. This season, they worked hard on their weaknesses. The team states that the coach always says “We are only as strong as our weakest link”.
The team is cited to believe that the energy their new Coach, Mr.Nunez, brings to the team is also part of the reason they are having such a successful season. Jesly Tabertus states the team “Feels more comfortable now” with their new coach. Coach Nunez’s background has consisted of basketball for multiple years. Ten years ago he began to coach the Forest Hills Basketball team, who in 2009,with his help won the Queens Division Championship. Other than coaching the Hillcrest JV basketball team, he is also the assistant coach for the Mens Basketball team at LaGuardia Community College, who are currently ranked number twelve in the nation. He states that his favorite thing about coaching is the competition. Nunez believes his coaching is tough, but fair. “Coach Nunez is very well rounded,” claims Cameron Brown.
The team is now on their way to round one of the playoffs. They successfully accomplished their goal of wanting to make the playoffs.
