Music, dancing, and all that jazz! This is what the Golden Globe and New York Critics Awards winning movie is all about. Directed by Damien Chazelle, La La Land is a comedic musical about pursuing your dreams and romance. The plot of this story transpires in the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood in particular.. It focuses on the reality of becoming successful in show business; such is the case of Mia, an aspiring actress played by leading lady Emma Stone. Mia has spent most of her time going through auditions and never seems to obtain a role. On the other hand, there is also Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, a man who is passionate about jazz music and is aspiring to open his own jazz club. However, he does not have a steady job or the financial means to open up the club that he wants.
A musical, the aspect of the movie that stands out is the many musical numbers it offers. The music genre is mainly jazz as are the dance productions which give out a “jazzy” vibe to the viewer. Although the movie was set in modern times, it gives you nostalgic feeling of the old Hollywood musicals. Also, the theme song, “City of Stars” sung by both Mia and Sebastian, really captures the central meaning behind the film.“Fools Who Dream” is another song which portrayed the idea of never giving up no matter what obstacles you may come across.
The movie is very captivating because it does not sugar coat the realities of life. Mia and Sebastian both portray the hardships that people face searching for stable job while following their dreams. This is a very inspiring movie that everyone should definitely watch; it will help push many aspiring artists to do what they really desire to do, with or without the help of that special someone.
In addition to the winning the Golden Globe and the New York Critic’s award for best picture of the year, further congratulations are in order to La La Land for winning 5 Oscars, including Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Direction by Damien Chazelle, Best Score, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures titled “City of Stars”composed by Justin Hurwitz, and Best Production Design. Also, Emma Stone won Best Actress. This film, although mistakenly called out for the Best Film during the Oscar’s ceremony, was indeed an inspiring movie worthy of having won and worthwhile to experience by those who need uplifting and inspiration to pursue their dreams.
