GIRLS VARSITY OFF TO ROCKY START

The Hillcrest Girls Varsity Basketball Lady Hawks are off to a rough start by dropping three of its first four games to start the year.
The team lost its first three games before defeating John Adams 41-38 at Hillcrest Gym. Defeated by Forest Hills High School 47-26 on December 1st, Bayside High School 54-34 on December 3rd, and Scholars Academy 40-24, the Girls Varsity early season struggles shows a possible lead into last season’s difficulties.
Last season, Lady Hawks’ won only two games and player Shaquana Vaughan stated that, “as a team, communication skills needed to be worked on on the court, which resulted in easy turnovers” as the team struggled.
Just two games into the season, the Lady Hawks are still trying to find some answers. “So far we haven't won a game yet, but we are learning new things after every game, not only about our competition and their game strategies, but also about ourselves as a team. If we could swing the ball around the perimeter effectively, we'd be able to find gaps in their defense,” stated Nicole Chavez, one of the three head captains of the Lady Hawks team. The Lady Hawks seem to be taking advantage of their losses by closely examining what strategies could be used on the court, but surely hope to win future games.
Junior Zaria Witherspoon is averaging 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Lady Hawks.
