The Model UN team was once again dominating and winning awards at local conferences. Nothing changes!
The Hillcrest Model UN class have spent the last month busy winning over 15 awards at two local conferences which brings the team’s two-year awards tally over 50.
Last month, the Model UN team, headed by advisor Mr. Shult, finished with the most awards -- 12 in total -- including Best Delegate Award by Mah Noor at the WHIMSUN Conference, which was held at the High School for Enterprise, Business, and Technology in Brooklyn. The team competed with 8 other schools including Bronx High School of Science.
Four students won Outstanding Performances including Keli Almonte, Maria Pazmino, Sunpreet Singh, and Kazi Ahmed. Sarah Khimjee won two awards including Outstanding Research for Position Paper and Commendable Performance. The Highlighter’s Editor-in-Chief, Zainab Tahir, won Commendable Performance Award as well.
At WHISMUN the Model UN class came in second place for the most awards won. This is due to the superb guidance of Mr. Shult coupled with the great teamwork displayed by all the members of the class. The conference went on for two days, it was filled with fun, debates, and nothing less than the best New York has to offer.
The team followed that up with another strong performance at the at Empire MUN conference held at New York University during the weekend of March 1. Arpita Tahsin and Mah Noor took home Best Delegate Awards for their work representing Norway as the Special Political and Decolonization Committee.
Mah Noor has been in the Model UN class for three years since she was a sophomore and since then she’s come a long way. Mah believes that being on the team for the last three years has been “life changing as it has enabled me to not only advocate for others, but also stand up for the things I believe in.” Mah credits the class for preparing her to look at the world in a new way. “Upon reflection, my time as a Model UN representative I have learned to express myself without restraint and embrace the freedom to think critically.” The class has completely changed her from the shy girl who always sat in the back of the class, to the confident girl who brought home the highest honor a Model UN student could win, not once but twice, the best delegate award.
The Model UN team will be hosting their own HILLMUN conference at Columbia University on April 25.
