Mr. Hickey Trying to Give Back for Students at Hillcrest
By Candy Almonte, Junior Writer
“Hillcrest is on-point!”
Those excited words are from the new addition to our Hillcrest family -- Mr. Hickey, a new English teacher in the Biz-tek SLC. Mr. Hickey likes the school and enjoys working here.
When Mr. Hickey was younger, he would have never thought that in an English classroom is where life would take him. “I never thought that I would become a teacher, but I always appreciated my teachers for how much they cared.”
For college, he had the opportunity to go to The Urban League of Greater Hartford for an after-school program. Students would come to the Urban League after-school, and together Hickey and others would run a bike shop. “This positive experience showed me the power of young people when given the proper setting and motivation to excel in a given area. It made me want to replicate this sense of empowerment and achievement among other youth.”
Mr. Hickey is trying to give back that setting to his students this year, and he is thrilled at the opportunity to do so. “I'm so happy to be part of a school that works to achieve at the highest level possible. The staff, student body and overall school culture is extremely warm and welcoming.”
Last year, he taught at Kennedy Campus in the Bronx as part of the Urban Teaching Residency Program. Before teaching at Kennedy Campus, he worked in a public school as a City Year Corps member in NYC.
Hickey enjoys being a teacher and cites his love of teaching English. “I was an English major in college, which was a very enlightening experience. To be able to apply what I learned in college in the real world is something most people don't get to do.”
