In February, 2007 Hillcrest opened their doors to one of the most accommodating and supportive guidance counselors, Ms. Bhanot. Over the years that she has been a guidance counselor at Hillcrest, Ms. Bhanot has impacted the lives of many Hillcrest students. For this, she has gained recognition, trust and respect from her students and other Hillcrest staff members.
Ms. Bhanot’s journey of guiding students started way before she stepped foot in Hillcrest as a guidance counselor. Prior to working here, she worked in Graham Windham with foster children. She was a coordinator in this organization and she helped newborns to three month-old children that had developmental disabilities.
Everybody has to be motivated in some way to become successful. As for Ms. Bhanot, she was motivated to make a change in other people’s lives because of her experiences as a former Hillcrest High School student. When she was attending Hillcrest, there was room for improvement and changes. There were no SLC’s, and she felt as if there weren’t any specific placements for the students. Now there are SLC’s within the school and every student belongs to one of the school’s small learning communities. She believes that the SLC’s are “perfect for identifying students easier and allowing there to be room for the students to grow, as far as their academic success."
Current Hillcrest Sophomore Jerelmy Figueroa stated that he visits Ms. Bhanot to get help for personal issues and to discuss school. “Ms.Bhanot makes home life easier and she helps kids who have hard times at school,” Jerelmy said.
Ms. Bhanot helps students develop realistic goals within their academic capacity. This includes constantly going over the student transcripts so they can see their improvement or what they can improve on. Ms. Bhanot strongly believes that “it is very important to help students recognize their strengths, to help them become successful.” She also helps boost students' self-esteem, so they will not get overwhelmed and give up on everything.
Current Hillcrest freshman, Stephanie Dean, describes Ms. Bhanot as a very caring person. “She’s like a second mother,” Stepanie says. Ms. Bhanot always makes sure that Stephanie is on top of her school work and assures that she earns honorable grades in all of her classes. Ms. Bhanot even helps Stephanie resolve personal issues.
Ms. Bhanot also helps students get college ready. She enrolls students in College Now classes, which can prepare students for college work and even help them earn college credits. She also has a handful of students that serve as Teacher Assistants and 10th graders that help the freshmen prepare for Regents.
Throughout the years of Ms. Bhanot’s counseling career, she has touched the lives of her students both academically and personally. She understands that we are not just students, but that we are human and we are not perfect. She motivates students to work to their full potential, and the fact that some students open up to her on a personal level is more of a reason for her to be recognized for significantly impacting students lives.
