Ms. Frazier Lives a Full Life Inside and Outside the Classroom
By Marcus Matibag, Senior Writer
Many students probably believe that school is all there is to a teacher; however, many teachers have full, thrilling lives and experiences outside of school. One these teachers is Ms. Frazier, an English teacher in The Academy of Media, Arts and Music.
Ms. Frazier grew up in Eastern Queens, New York with two younger siblings along with many cousins and friends. Every summer, as a child, she visited the Adirondack Mountains with a combined group of family members and friends; Ms. Frazier loved it so much that even now she visits the area annually with the same group of people. During her spare time, she tends to read. In fact, she loves reading so much that she goes as far as to read numerous books at the same time. Ms. Frazier stated, “I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember.”
When she is not reading, she attends many road trips with her husband. To also mention, she loves to go jogging. It has been a hobby of hers for a long time and is recently getting back to it. Another really interesting fact is that Ms. Frazier been in the Navy for eight years -- four of which she spent on an aircraft carrier. Being in the Navy has helped develop her personality as it is today.
As a child, she became inspired to become a teacher by her aunt, an English Literature professor, and her father, a retired teacher. It appears many of her family members are teachers. “It runs in the family”, commented Ms. Frazier. As a teacher, she enjoys watching students learn new things and expand their worldly views. She considers this to be rewarding because she’s able to contribute through her teaching.
She has been teaching students for eleven years -- eight years in San Diego, California as well as two years in a private school here in New York. Teaching in Hillcrest High School would make Ms. Frazier’s first time teaching for the New York Department of Education. When it comes down to goals, she has achieved most of them due to her curiosity. Satisfying her curiosity is her motivation to pursue her interests. Her current goal is to learn about Art and Art History.
Ms. Frazier is clearly not just an ordinary teacher. It would never occur to a student that a teacher would have a history being a sailor. If you have ever heard the phrase, “There’s more than meets the eye”, it would apply here.
