Many people are familiar with the term AP courses but how many of you know what a college now course is? Many of us have heard the name college now, but how many of us know what a college now course is and its benefits to high schoolers? A college now course is a particular subject that is taught by a professor of the CUNY system. Upon completion of the course, students gain official college credits. Hillcrest offers a variety of college now courses ranging from criminal justice to cultural diversity.
College now seems similar to an AP class but the two vary in many ways. College Now is a free program that offers pre-college and college-credit courses. Students who pass the course receive a transcript from the college that gave the course showing their GPA and the amount of college credits earned. These credits are transferable to many institutions within and outside the CUNY system. On the other hand, an Advanced Placement (AP) course is a high school course that prepares students to take an AP exam which depending on their score will give them the allotted amount of credits the course is worth.
Going to college is one of the most important decisions any young adult must make. Students shouldn’t just decide to go to college but to thrive in college. Participating in College Now can provide important information and an understanding of college while students are still in high school. Students who qualify can start taking College Now courses for college credit, are able to experience first hand workload college students are dealt with, and earn credits that can be transferred to the college they’ll eventually attend reducing their time spent in college—all without paying costly university tuition. By providing preparation for college, the program increases a student’s range of choices after high school graduation because they’ll have already more experience under their belt as opposed to a normal high school student.
College Now courses have a variety of benefits for students in high school. A variety of studies have shown that participation in College Now courses lead to a plethora of benefits from college enrollment to credit accumulation and GPA. College Now in general has been the topic of many experimental studies that try to determine how beneficial these courses actually are. In addition, College Now partnerships don’t only help the students but also helps the teachers, school leaders, and counselors understand more about college level studies for their students.
