Ms. Johnson is "Like a Mom" Bringing Warmth to Health Sciences

Ms. Johnson, the school counselor for the Health Sciences Institute, is a significant individual with outstanding qualities who helps those around her. Not only does she have a big heart, Ms. Johnson influences others to reach their full potential.
In the Hillcrest community, Ms. Johnson develops an individual relationship with her students while building a trusting bond with them. Ms. Johnson does an extraordinary job at filling the requirements of being a guidance counselor, as she is someone her students often come to when they need a means of conveyance.
Ms. Johnson has been working for New York City for 18 years, 16 of which she has been a guidance counselor. Within those 16 years, she has been a school counselor for the Health Sciences Institute in Hillcrest High School for 14 years.
Not only is Ms. Johnson an exceptional school counselor, but she has also done remarkable things in her past. Ms. Johnson previously attended the University of South Mississippi as an undergraduate. However, she was motivated to move further in her education so she attended Saint John's University. Ms. Johnson didn't just stop there, she previously served in the military for four years. She also took part in the United States Air Force and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School. Ms. Johnson worked as a Fraud Investigator and later as an Employment Commission Veterans Counselor. Ms. Johnson feels that these achievements contributed to shaping her into the woman she is today.
Although Ms. Johnson is a strong and determined woman, she faced many problems and sacrificed a lot in her life. Despite raising three children and attending night school, Ms. Johnson still found a way to pull through her struggles. No matter how many obstacles she encountered, her success was driven by being positive under the circumstances she had to face. She has always received encouragement and inspiration from family, friends, teachers, and administrators who have worked and retired from the New York City School System and were activists for NYC Anti-Poverty Initiatives.
Even after all of the hardships of life, Ms. Johnson was able to assist students in any way she found possible all while putting a smile on their faces. Mark Spencer, a Health Sciences senior, stated, “Ms. Johnson treats us like we are her own. She’s there for us when we need someone to talk to and she's like a mom when we need her to be there for us.”
Ms. Johnson is one of the best at giving aid to her students in any form because she has a one of a kind personality. She has a way of making every individual student feel special and loved. “Ms. Johnson is the type of person who you can be very comfortable and open with. I have been to her countless of times about personal problems and school problems she has never failed to help me and I am very grateful for that,” said Health Science senior Rokeya Begum.
Ms. Johnson has a very open personality and loves having fun. She is filled with so much energy and happiness and can always be seen with a smile on her face. Ms. Johnson is a very entertaining person, she loves being creative, artistic, and also has a passion for music. She loves all types of music; for example, she loves listening to jazz, rock, pop, R&B and many more genres. Ms. Johnson was assigned to play the cello in her high school band despite the fact that she wanted to play the violin. She stuck with the cello and since making that small commitment, her eyes and mind have been opened to new ideas and perspectives. She learned that even though trying new things may be challenging, once you try it, you may like it.
Besides her appreciation for the arts, Ms. Johnson also loves being active. She loves the outdoors and likes to run as well as do many other physical activities such as mixed martial arts. Ms. Johnson also has a keen sense of fashion, “I believe having a good fashion sense and hygiene is important. We represent who we are by how we carry ourselves.”
Ms. Johnson has a way of making every individual student feel special and loved. She makes it her obligation to assist you in any which way possible as she is always there to advise you and guide you down the right path. New teacher, Ms. Utke, said, "Although I just started here, I feel Ms. Johnson was very helpful kind and takes interest in her students. She is very friendly and helpful."
She has shown us all that with hard work, dedication, and an open mind, anything can be achieved. Ms. Johnson has helped those around her realize that giving up is not an option because the more you struggle the more glorious the triumph. Assistant Principal of Pupil Personnel Services Mr. Michalos said, "Ms. Johnson is a hardworking person who will not rest until she finishes her work.”
She has a message to our school. ”Hillcrest students. Plan, prepare, and move forward into your future with confidence and boldness, knowing that all things are possible. When you believe in yourself, NOTHING is impossible!”
