Ms. Hiller is a unique guidance counselor from all the other guidance counselor in Hillcrest. Ms. Hiller is very kind hearted and thoughtful. She influences others to never give up, keep pushing and always continue your education as far as you can. Ms. Hiller has been working in the instructional support department as a guidance counselor at Hillcrest for about 15 years now. She works hard to ensure all her students are getting the right amount of help to pass all their classes and graduate. Her students are from all of the different slcs in Hillcrest except the Pre-Med Institute.
She graduated from Hofstra University with her Masters Degree in school counseling. She never thought about being a guidance counselor. She went back to school later to get her Master’s Degree because she felt that her kids were old enough. Ms.Hiller “was fortunate” as she said to get a job at Hillcrest full time in September of 2000. She developed a passion for being a guidance counselor since her main skill was being a good listener. Ms.Hiller said that “it’s one of the main qualities that you need to be a guidance counselor.” Ms.Hiller develops a kind and strong relationship with her students which allows them to come to her at anytime and that creates a trusting bond with her.
“I am blessed” says Ms.Hiller. She helps students with IEPs which are a learning plan for them. “ We use that as a guide to help program these students appropriately if they need extra help in certain courses, support, or even resource room” said Ms.Hiller. Ms.Hiller also helps students with CTT classes which are classes that have two teachers in them. “It’s a genic class but it also has two teachers in it so it’s a mix” Ms.Hiller said. For the genic students it doesn’t make a difference but for the ICT students this is where the teacher would step in and give them the support they need. This allows the student to ask questions or even review. “In the beginning things were very confusing but I got used to it now” she said. There are hundreds of different official class codes and her students have different codes which makes it difficult to keep track of.
Ms.Hiller is a very open person, who has a open mind. “The best part of being a guidance counselor is watching the student you help progress and knowing that you was apart of that progress” Ms.Hiller said. She loves helping students and giving them the best advice possible. “Ms.Hiller helps me by encouraging me to pursue my dreams and also listen to my thoughts” said Dominique Wright. Dominique who is a senior just doesn’t consider Ms.Hiller as her guidance counselor she said that “she could even say that she’s more like my family.”
