Former Hillcrest Global History teacher and Model United Nations (MUN) adviser Kevin Shult, envisioned the creation of a Model United Nations team that would become one of the best in the city. With many years of hard work, that dream became a reality. Despite his departure, Mr. Shult left behind a legacy which his and eventual students would be responsible for continuing; that legacy influenced the commencement of the third annual HILLMUN 2017 Model United Nations conference at Hillcrest High School. With the leadership of the current adviser, Mr. Matthew Jackson and the new Education in Motion Adviser, Maria Pazmino, the students have been preparing since August 2016 to accomplish their mission of delivering their best conference possible.
Model United Nations is an educational simulator in which students act as delegates of a developed or undeveloped country, and debate on different international topics and crisis currently occurring. With the help of the executive staff: Secretary General Naomi Dutes, Under Secretary General Taishiry Salazar, and Chief of External Relations Payal Shah, the students were able to construct a well organized conference as a team. Education in Motion adviser Maria Pazmino, often uses her free time to help prepare the conference materials, despite balancing her busy college schedule and social life. Prime students who held the responsibility of monitoring committees were encouraged to propose an international dilemma that would influence an intriguing debate. Though, with this opportunity followed intense research regarding their topic enforced. Since October of last year, attendees have worked on composing a 10-15 paged background guide regarding their desired committees, which goes through several systems of revision before being published on the conference website. Training is also significant for chairing students in order to develop the necessary skills needed to conduct correct parliamentary procedure, by our Under Secretary General. These dedicated students then conjoined their knowledge and individual techniques, to produce a smooth running and enlightening experience for all students who competed.
The conference was held on January 7, 2017, and was hosted by Hillcrest High School. Schools from various parts of New York travelled extensive routes to participate in this momentous event. Attending schools such as Bronx High School of Science, LaGuardia High School, High School of Enterprise, Business and Technology, and many more, all followed appropriate procedures and discussed their stances within several various discussions, to ultimately develop a resolution to prevent social, political, and economic disruption within nations. Some examples of the available committees were the Health Of Child In War Zones, Exploitation of Children Tourism, and Maritime Crime in the Modern World.
At the conclusion of the conference, several native Hillcrest students, received awards for their performances. Juniors, Pablo Gomez De Castro and Kervens Jasmin won Best Delegate in their respective double delegation committee. Outstanding Performance was won by Sophomores Roseanne Rozario, Rawdah Rahim, Aziaun Scott, and Tamim Wadud, who all participated in individual delegation committees.
Overall, the students believe that this conference could not have been more successful without the cooperation of all working staff and their fellow classmates. The entire Model United Nation team would like to express their gratitude for the help of Maria Pazmino and Matthew Jackson for guiding the students and conference, as well as ensuring the prosperity and tranquility of the assignments. Students would also like to thank Mr. Meichsner, Mr.Finkelstein, and Mr.Morrison for providing the conference with security, technology, and the accessible rooms to host committees. Finally, students would like to acknowledge Mr.Rashid for assisting with funding in order to provide the best experience for all students. The Highlighter would like to congratulate the Model United Nations crew for their outstanding achievements and performance!
