Hillcrest Welcomes Our New College Advisor: Ms. Conforti
By Sanaya Kumar, 19'
On September 8th, 2016, students and teachers welcomed a new member to the Hillcrest community. As she takes on the position of College Advisor, Ms. Conforti, a Queens College graduate, expressed her enthusiasm for the 2016-2017 school year, as she pursues her passion for working with youth and developing a student's knowledge on college and career readiness. Hillcrest representative and principal, Mr. Morrison does not cease to express his joy for the newest member of the Hawk family as he discusses his expectations and preferences with the Highlighter staff.
Since the departure of our exceptional college advisor Ms. Gordon, Hillcrest has been on an ongoing mission to fill the huge vacuum created by her absence. Hillcrest searched for a colleague who is more than eligible to fill the position she once held. When asked what specific requirements the ideal college advisor should possess, Mr. Morrison confessed, “Well first off, I think of Ms. Gordon, our previous college advisor. I think about the qualities that she possessed and [those] that Ms. Conforti possesses, and I believe that any counselor who works with students, is one who obviously has a passion for guiding students.”
Ms. Conforti has always had a passion for helping students succeed as well as ensuring they are prepared for college and future careers. She believes that with the correct guidance and knowledge all students should be able to go to the college of their dreams for little or no cost. As her Hillcrest career develops, she aspires to understand each student's preferences and thoughts individually, so that she will be able to provide better guidance throughout their high school career. “I would like to learn as much as I can from the student body, and keep the process consistent for the most part until the students are comfortable with the transition of a new college advisor.”
So far, she has grown to genuinely enjoy her new environment and says that each day she’ll learn more from the students and staff that surround her. Hillcrest’s students welcomed the new advisor with open arms and are nothing less than enthusiastic to understand her better.
The renowned college advisor Ms.Conforti who comes from a private school setting has a lot in store for us. Hillcrest is sure she’ll perform her duties exceptionally well and every student will receive the guidance they deserve. When asked for any further input she’d like to give to concerned students, she replied, “One change I would like to implement is for the junior class to get involved and informed earlier on in the year so once they get to senior year, it is less hectic and more enjoyable.” Every student's high school experience should be one of growth and worthwhile memories, and Ms. Conforti is a key component in that developmental process. “The students from Hillcrest High School have been so good to me already. I received many ‘welcome’ and ‘introductory’ emails over the summer,” and she continues, “The best part of my day is when my office is full of students!”
So good luck Ms, Conforti!
