Coming from a family of Science experts, Ms. Piil gained her love for Science at a young age. Working as a Science teacher at Hillcrest High School for 2 years, Ms. Piil has helped improved her students test grades and working habits significantly. Ms. Piil started teaching at Hillcrest in 2014 and enjoys getting to know the faculty and students, not only on a professional level but also on a personal level. Her main goal as a teacher is to show students that Science has many applications in the real world and not just in the classroom.
Growing up, Ms. Piil knew she wanted to become a teacher. As a child attending her 9th grade class, Ms. Pill loved helping other kids and enjoyed tutoring them. She always knew she could teach. Ms. Piil’s goal was to teach in a college but if that wasn’t possible then she’d teach in a High School environment. Ms. Piil has a Masters and Bachelors in Geology obtained from a University upstate. Ms. Piil spent 8 years of her life teaching -- two of which she spent teaching at Hillcrest.
As a teacher, Ms. Piil believes that learning and teaching come hand-in-hand. “If you can’t explain what you learn, then you really don’t understand it.” Her message to all her students is to make sure they understand what they learn. Ms. Piil offers her students the chance to attend other classes incase they need extra help.
Using photography to get through to her students, on her spare time Ms. Piil travels through the borough of Queens in places such as Bayside, Long Island City and JFK to take different pictures of different topics of Science. She believes that through the use of photography she can help students connect Science to the real world. “It is about the students living in Science everyday,” she said. Mr. Most, a fellow Science teacher in Hillcrest, states that “Queens is a part of nature and it fits into Science more than he has ever realized especially Earth Science.” If it was not from the teachings of Ms. Pill he would not have understood the real reasoning to Science and what it has to offer.
Teaching such a delicate subject, Ms. Piil tends to be strict in her lesson plans. She believes that telling her students the truth in their work will help them see their mistakes and learn from them. She says that when she teaches, she teaches with a tough love personality¨. Doing so, she believes that it teaches them how to think logically and develop skills for the real world. Throughout the year, she says her students are not too fond of her because of her tough love teaching methods. Although, after they take the Regents, her students can’t thank her enough. Donnalisa Hamnauth a student of Ms. Piil said, “She is a harsh teacher but in the long run it helps motivate me to do better. My test grades improved and I am proud of my grades so far.”
Ms. Piil expands her students minds to think outside the box. As a teacher of Hillcrest, Ms. Piil expects her students to pass the Regents or their next tests to come but that isn't particularly her goal. Ms. Piil want her students to connect Science to the real world and use Science to help guide them along their lives.
