One of the many interesting programs in Hillcrest High School is called NYPD Explorers. This is a community service, career-oriented program, designed in many high schools throughout New York. The purpose is to help young boys and girls learn more about Law Enforcement. This program does not only involve high school students but also to young adults, throughout New York City to help build relations between the community and the New York City Police Department. In our school, Hillcrest, this program is mainly assisted by the Public Service and Law SLC, but all students are welcomed to participate and gain experience in this field.
This program grants students various benefits. When talking to Ms. Khan, director of Public Service and Law, she stated, “this program provides career experiences and leadership development opportunity for all students who are interested in law enforcement careers.” This program provides students the benefits of gaining career experiences and making a decision about their career choice in high school. Not only that, but they are able to gain scholarship opportunities and also become knowledgeable about law enforcement. In addition to that, they are able to learn about the requirements needed in order to prepare themselves for a successful career in law. Career experience and leadership skills are very important when it comes to law enforcement, conveniently the program helps students develop these much-needed skills.
The police officer cited, “NYPD Explorer program is designed for teenagers and high school students to learn military and war skills.”Among the citation the officer talked about various activities that the students are involved in, some include: a spring dance in which they partake in, runway shows, and food drives. In these events they raise money and awareness in order to donate to the least fortunate. For example, donating money for food, housing, and medical assistance to those who are injured. Moreover, they also help victims of natural disasters and those in time of war or famine. This program plays an important role in society and the community by helping those in danger. According to the police officer, “students practice accident scene procedures, bomb threat response, and proper equipment use.” Furthermore, Sergeant Dylan Sonny Singh and Hysheria Potter, students of this program, added “we learn team building, respect, how to take care and treat others.” The students in this program are ranked based on their activities. Dylan and Hysheria, are both Sergeants in this program because they are active and always participate in all events and activities.
Police officers are not only strict with the students in this program, but they are also friendly with them. Whenever any students want to have a part time job or any college recommendation needed, they asked the officers to do that for them. The police officers take them to watch movies, visit museums, and many other places in order to build a good relationship between them and their students. They also go to some places where major events happened, such as the 9/11 tragedy in order to familiarize themselves with what the police experienced at the time.In this program students are able to learn about things such as accident scene procedures, bomb threat response and proper equipment usage. As said before, this program helps students build career experiences while having a job in the federal agency. They are also involved in national competitions alongside networking with people.
Annually, nearly 2,500 young men and women from 50 states take part in the week long law enforcement and fire explorers program to learn law enforcement and fire skills and tips from some of the highest ranking law enforcement officials in the country. The NYPD Explorer program is a very significant program for students interested in law career for their future success.
