global citizens' Star Oditi Debi Demonstrates the Benefit of Hard Work
By Shefa Islam, Junior Writer
Oditi Debi is a student of Hillcrest High School who worked very hard to be the star student of the Global Citizens Institute.
Oditi is from Bangladesh. She came here about three and a half years ago, and she is a senior who will be graduating this year. Although she was not in this country for a long period of time, she worked hard to achieve the average of 93.1 which was the highest grade average for any senior in Newcomers.
Oditi is from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. “America is a new world to me” as Oditi describes her new country. Like most students, it was difficult for her to adapt to the new country, new language, new culture and a new environment. Everything was new to her. Her family left everything in Bangladesh for her and her other siblings to have a better future. Oditi said, “I think everyone's life changes when they come to USA. For me, I think I have a better chance to achieve my dreams, which is to be an engineer.”
Oditi is a very intelligent and bright student. In the future, her goal is to get into City College because they have an excellent engineering program for students who are interested. However, getting through high school can be difficult. Oditi said, “All my teachers and friends helped though my success in high school. The best support I got was from my family, specially from my sister.” Since her parents left everything in Bangladesh for Oditi and her older sister, they were very proud of her because of her achievements in school.
Oditi is trying her level best to achieve all her goals. At the same time, she is involved in extracurricular activities. She’s been in Honor Roll, last year she was part of the ARISTA National Honors Society and the school’s Math Club. She also helps out her teachers in her free time. Mr. Rios, Assistant Principal of Math, said, “Oditi has tremendous potential- her hard work, dedication, honesty and willingness to help others are indicative of future success.”
Even though she spends a lot of time studying, she did not forget to make memorable fun moments. She said, “Well, there are so many memories and all of them are really very nostalgic for me. I will never forget those memories. Some of them were with my friends and teachers who always praise my work and have supported me.”
One of the thing that motivates her to do better is her previous achievements and success. The teachers wish her the best of luck with her future goals.
