Video games have the power to influence teens positively and negatively. Studies show that playing video games has the power to affect your brain and vision. While video games have the power to help one learn, it also has the power to make one aggressive. It seems that video games has pros and cons on a player's brain.
The pros of video games is that it can psychologically use methods to help players learn and relieve symptoms of distress. Video games has the power to help a child learn. "The younger kids are focusing more on their planning and problem solving while they are actually playing the game, while adolescents are focusing less on their planning and strategizing and more on the here and now," said Fordham psychologist Fran Blumberg. This suggests that a child is learning skills just by playing a video game.
Studies shows that playing video games reduce stress and depression. 2009's Annual Review of Cybertherapy and Telemedicine included a study stating that “teens who play games who suffered from mental health issues such as stress and depression were able to vent their frustration and aggression by playing video games and showed a noted improvement.” Video games can relieve pain as well as the symptoms of stress and depression. To conclude the pros, video games have the power to help one learn strategic skills and relieve depressive episodes.
There are cons to video games. Teens tend to become more reluctant in fighting when playing violent video games. Douglas A. Gentile, Ph.D. stated that playing violent games affect teens behavior as the brain develops the violence content. In other words, this means that the content in video games stores in a player's’ head, making them act like the violence in video games. Young kids who play violent video games think it is fine to become violent to family and friends. It is argued that violent video games provide a safe environment for aggressive and angry feelings and that will help reduce crime. This statement can be argued from the fact that nearly all young men play video games, and develop violent acts. Due to the fact the study had shown that these young men were the ones who were playing video games,it implies a causal relationship. Studies show how violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, increases in bullying, and violence towards women. In this case, video games have harmed the brain. Playing video games for long hours can hurt your vision. Staring at the screen can make one more prone to becoming blind. Human eyes are not made to stare at the brightness of a television for hours. To conclude the cons, video games have the power to make a player more aggressively active and hurt a player's vision.
In conclusion, there are some interesting things to know about video games- good and bad. People of all ages play videos games so it would be quite helpful to know some of the consequences.
