Girls Volleyball Show Hard Work in Losing Season
Written by Jonathan Perez, Junior Writer
The Hillcrest Girls Volleyball team finished this season with a 2 to 8 record coming in 5th place in their league. Despite not winning half of their games, overall the team demonstrated a lot of effort, hard work and determination.
The Volleyball team, led by coach Ms. Ruiz, ended this season with a 2 to 8 record. Team leaders and players all put in effort in every game. Captain Kunsang Youdon ended the season with 29 Assists and 2 Digs. Co-Captain Sasha Crawford ended the season with 10 digs and 18 kills. The Hillcrest Volleyball team gained experience this season, and players of all experience levels got better. The goal is to use this season to become a more effective and stronger team next year.
The team got off to a rough start, as they lost their first 5 games to William Bryant, Thomas Edison, Flushing, Jamaica and Flushing. The team played much better in the second half of the season by beating Forest Hills and Thomas Edison in a 3 game stretch. The Lady Hawks are a team that has potential -- all they need is a little bit of more of experience. Many students are proud of the Volleyball team and state that they love watching their games.
Coach Ruiz has been playing volleyball since she was 12 years-old, which shows her dedication to the sport and her knowledge of the sport. “Volleyball means everything to me, and it certainly has made a huge influence in my life as a female athlete, as a teacher, and as a coach.” Her wanting of a JV team just shows how much she wants to improve the players who she coaches. As a coach and player for many years coach Ms. Ruiz not only loves the sport, but understands what it takes to win and the Girls Volleyball team has a bright future. Overall the Volleyball Lady Hawks are a team with lots of motivation to improve and a great future ahead of them. If anybody is interested in joining the team, contact Ms. Ruiz for more information.
